SUBSTANCE: described is a method and a system for medium independent handover (MIH) which uses an operations, administration and management protocol (OAM) of an Ethernet. Connectivity of communication lines between user equipment (UE) and MIH of a point of service (PoS) is controlled by using the OAM protocol. An OAM trigger which indicates the state of the communication line is displayed on the MIH event, and the MIH event is transmitted for potential handover. The OAM protocol can be IEEE 802.3ah or 802.lag.
