FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing ethidium bromide (3,8-diamino-5-ethyl-6-phenylphenanthridinium bromide) through quaternisation of 3,8-dinitro-6- phenylphenanthridinium with excess diethylsulphate and then reduction of the obtained 3,8-dinitro-5-ethyl-6-phenylphenanthridinium ethyl sulphate with iron while heating in a mixture of 1 N sulphuric acid and 95% ethanol, treatment with a sodium hydroxide solution, extraction with n-butanol and treatment with hydrobromic acid.
EFFECT: simple method and high output of product which is used as a fluorescent dye widely used in molecular biology, genetic engineering and diagnostic medicine.
