FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: ultrasonic flaw detection involves steps on which an ultrasonic wave falls on a specimen through an angular sensor from an inclined direction. The diffracted wave formed at the edge of a defect on the specimen is detected through a normal sensor over the defect and the position of the edge of the defect from the front surface of the specimen is determined using a triangular method based on the beam path which is a component of the diffracted wave which propagates directly upwards and passes through the defect between the angular sensor for transmission and the normal sensor for reception, and based on the interval between the position of incidence and position for detection of the ultrasonic wave, or based on the difference between propagation time of the surface wave to the normal sensor for reception and propagation time of the beam which is a component of the diffracted wave which propagates directly over the defect to the normal sensor for reception.
EFFECT: possibility of easy and accurate determination of the position, depth and height of a defect which can be a surface crack, corroded part near the surface layer of a thick specimen and an insignificant defect.
