FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: device with a diffraction grating has a diffraction grating which has dielectric optical material and a first surface with a periodic structure coated with hydrophobic material which reduces wettability of the diffraction grating, and a second surface with an electrode layer. A homogeneous liquid layer is on the first surface of the said diffraction grating and is made such that it does not enter the region of the air pocket in the absence of an electric field in the homogeneous liquid layer, and enters the said region by predetermined value due to capillary effect and high wettability of the first surface when there is an electric field in the homogeneous liquid layer, by changing the efficiency of the diffraction grating in order to change optical intensity of the optical beam passing through the said diffraction grating and reflected from it. The electrode layer is made on the second surface and is made with possibility of creating the said electric field.

EFFECT: short response time, adjustable pixel intensity and high efficiency.
