FIELD: information technology.
SUBSTANCE: compound serial-parallel content-addressable memory (CAM) has serial and parallel CAM cells arranged into a set (N) of columns and a set (M) of rows. Each row includes at least one serial CAM cell and at least two parallel CAM cells. Search on M rows is carried out in parallel. For each row, search on serial CAM cells is done in series and search on parallel cells is selectively carried out in parallel. The CAM also includes a former which forms N search lines for N columns of the CAM cells, with one search line for each column. The former sets the search line into a N-bit value for search in the CAM. Before each search operation, the former pre-designates at least one search line for at least one column of serial CAM cells in order to pre-load the match line for each row.
EFFECT: high efficiency with low power consumption.
