FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: elementary sulphur is heated and brought into contact with a reducing agent in a heater to obtain an output stream of reducing gas containing hydrogen sulphide. The reducing gas is brought into contact with a stream which contains sulphur dioxide to form a stream of a feeding gas mixture. The stream of feeding gas mixture is brought into contact with an activated catalyst for reaction of hydrogen sulphide with sulphur dioxide to form a gas stream containing elementary sulphur and water. Elementary sulphur from said gas stream is regenerated. The method of converting sulphur dioxide involves feeding a reducing agent into a heater. Elementary sulphur is also fed into the heater and heated to temperature between approximately 500°C and approximately 650°C. The reducing agent and elementary sulphur are brought into contact in a first reactor to form an output stream of gaseous reducing agent containing H2S, COS or CS2. The gaseous reducing agent is brought into contact with an output stream containing sulphur dioxide in a second reactor to form a stream of gaseous product containing elementary sulphur. The gaseous product is cooled for condensation and regeneration of elementary sulphur.
EFFECT: low fuel consumption, improved quality of sulphur.
