FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: bromobutyl rubber is used in petrochemical industry by treating butyl rubber with bromine in a hydrocarbon solvent, where the said bromine is released in the reaction zone during reaction of aqueous sodium bromide solution with an oxidising agent. The oxidising agent is sodium hypochlorite. The process is carried out in the presence of an aqueous solution of a mineral acid. Further, the bromated rubber polymerisation product undergoes neutralisation. The water is degassed and the bromobutyl rubber is dried. The oxidising agent is added in one or two steps. Neutralisation is carried out with aqueous sodium sulphite solution and an alkali.
EFFECT: merging bromine and bromated rubber formation steps.
