The preferred compounds of the said agent are 8-chlorotheophylline, 8-bromotheophylline and theophylline-7-acetate. The invention also relates to a method of slowing down proliferation of tumour cells and a method of inducing differentiation in mouse melanoma B16-F10 cells. Each of the methods involves addition of an effective amount of the said agent in an effective amount, preferably in amount of 1 mM.
