FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: Rayleigh wave pulses which run around a surface crack are emitted into an article and the time it takes the surface wave to travel from the emitter to the receiver is measured. The crack initiation time is determined from the emergence of a shear wave transformed on the crack, said shear wave being incident on a normal and reflected from the bottom surface of the article, moving towards the crack and once more transformed thereon into a surface wave and picked up by a receiving transducer.
EFFECT: possibility of detecting shallow surface cracks.
