SUBSTANCE: apparatus includes in the following order: a first polariser; a first quarter-wave plate (nx>ny≥nz); a liquid crystal cell; a second quarter-wave plate having an Nz coefficient substantially equal to that of the first quarter-wave plate; birefringent layer (II) (nx<ny≤nz); a second polariser; a birefringent layer (III) between the first birefringent layer (I) and the liquid crystal cell and/or between the liquid crystal cell and the second birefringent layer (I). The liquid crystal cell displays a black screen by aligning liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer substantially vertically to the substrate surface.
EFFECT: apparatus has higher contrast ratio at a large viewing angle and can be easily manufactured at a low cost.
