SUBSTANCE: device has a first birefringent layer which satisfies the condition Nz>0.9 and has a slow axis lying in a plane which is orthogonal to the axis of absorption of a first polariser, a first quarter-wave plate which has a slow axis lying in a plane which forms an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of absorption of the first polariser; the liquid crystal cell displays a black screen by aligning liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal cell vertically to the substrate surface. A second quarter-wave plate has a slow axis lying in a plane which is orthogonal to the slow axis lying in the plane of the first quarter-wave plate, and the second birefringent layer satisfies the condition Nz<0.1 and has a slow axis lying in a plane which is parallel to the axis of absorption of the second polariser.

EFFECT: invention provides a liquid crystal display which has higher contrast in a wide view angle and which can be easily manufactured at a low cost.
