FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: colour display method maps an input image signal into an output image signal for a display. The method involves gamma display, extraction of the sought brightness, determining coefficient and adaptation of the displayed brightness. Gamma display maps the input image signal, having input colour pixels defined by the input brightness and input colour index, into a displayed image signal having corresponding displayed pixel colours defined by the displayed brightness and displayed colour index. The input colour pixels lie within the input colour gamma, different from the colour gamma of the display. The sought brightness is extracted by searching stored brightness in a lookup table at the displayed colour index. The coefficient is determined from the difference between the sought brightness and the displayed brightness. The displayed brightness is adapted using the coefficient to obtain output brightness which is closer to the sought brightness than the displayed brightness. The output image signal is defined by the displayed colour index and the output brightness.

EFFECT: improved colour rendering of the display which has primary colours covering the gamma different from that of the input signal.
