SUBSTANCE: image-forming apparatus has a section for the main unit of the image-forming apparatus and at least one removable unit which is installed in the section of the main unit of the image-forming apparatus for performing image-forming operations, wherein the section of the main unit of the image-forming apparatus has a master controller for controlling operations of the image-forming apparatus, wherein said at least one removable unit contains: a memory unit for storing information on said removable unit and storing a program for initialisation; and a central processing unit (CPU) connected to the memory unit, wherein when said removable unit is installed in the image-forming apparatus, the CPU performs initialisation for said removable unit independently of the master controller of the image-forming apparatus using the program stored in the memory unit, wherein the CPU is adapted to access information stored in the memory unit and perform authentication and cryptographic data exchange with the master controller of the image-forming apparatus.
