SUBSTANCE: invention can be used as coating on the surface of different substrates for decomposing contaminants, purification from impurities which harm the environment and prolonged maintenance of the outward appearance of the surface. The photocatalytic composition contains hydraulic binder, polycarboxyl or acrylic super-liquefier, cellulose ester with viscosity 10000-120000 mPa·s, an adhesive, filler from calcium carbonate, silicon dioxide or silicon dioxide-calcium carbonate and a photocatalyst. The invention also relates to a method of preparing said composition by mixing its components, mortar containing said composition homogeneously mixed with water, articles with a coating of said composition, as well as methods of removing contaminants from the environment and increasing durability of articles and architectural elements by using articles or architectural elements coated with said composition. EFFECT: obtaining a coating with high photocatalytic activity and improved rheological properties.
