FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: gas detector has a housing 1, electrodes 3 and 4, a radioisotope radiation source 6, a pulse generator 7 and a measuring circuit 8. The distinguishing feature of the gas detector is that it has a central electrode 3 on which a Ni63 radioisotope ionisation source is mounted, having activity of less than MSA (minimum significant activity), which is connected to the alternating-sign pulse generator 7, and collecting electrode 4 which placed coaxially with respect to the central electrode and connected to the measuring circuit. Disclosed also is a method for operation of the gas detector, characterised by that the amplitude of voltage and duration of pulses of both polarities is set by a microprocessor unit 12 such that the duration of pulses is longer than the time over which ions of analysed substances move between the central electrode 3 and the collecting electrode 4 and shorter than the characteristic time of ion-molecule reactions between reactant ions and molecules of substances hindering analysis.
EFFECT: high specificity, stability and sensitivity of the gas detector.
