FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: to avoid the need to pass along a pipeline route in order to locate a defect and detect a defect when conducting commissioning work, the present method of detecting defects in pipelines involves connecting a microwave generator to the pipeline, using the pipeline as a waveguide for the emitted electromagnetic waves; presence and location of defects is determined from a microwave signal received by two microwave signal receivers with synchronous scanning antennae lying in the middle of the investigated pipeline section on both sides at a distance a from its axis: where L is the length of the investigated pipeline section; α is the maximum turning angle of the scanning antenna of the receiver.
