FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method of determining the signalling start time of an alarm device (120) involves determining a measured value at a measuring time, wherein the measured value is an indicator for the hazard potential within a controlled area; determining the latency time through a function (261, 262) which, for a plurality of different measured values, yields the corresponding latency time and which has a continuous characteristic; and determining the start time based on the measuring time and the determined latency time. Also described is an alarm device for alarm signalling, having a detector for determining the measured value and an estimating device which is configured to realise said method. A program element may be loaded into the estimation unit of the alarm device and prompt execution of said method.

EFFECT: enabling early signalling, but within a specified time interval.
