FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the technology of processing zirconium tetrafluoride to obtain zirconium diboride and boron trifluoride. The method of processing zirconium tetrafluoride involves reaction of zirconium tetrafluoride with a reducing agent in self-propagating high-temperature synthesis conditions with addition of a mixture of substances which increase thermicity of the process into the reaction mixture. The reducing agent used is elementary boron in powder form, which is taken in stoichiometric excess of the reaction 3ZrF4+10B=3ZrB2+4BF3; the substances which increase thermicity of the process are zirconium metal powder and components of the reaction mixture react at pressure lower than 2.30 MPa, wherein the weight ratio ZrF4:Zr:B in the starting mixture is kept in the range of 1:(0.6-0.7):(0.3-0.4), and the ignition charge used is a mixture of zirconium metal and boron in a ratio which corresponds to the stoichiometry of synthesis of zirconium diboride therefrom.
EFFECT: obtaining valuable products of reaction of zirconium diboride and boron trifluoride.
