FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of applying a protective coating on cathodes of an electrolysis cell for producing aluminum from molten electrolytes which is wetted by the obtained aluminum. Method involves electrodeposition of coating components on cathodes from molten electrolyte containing additives, which are sources of coating, wherein the electrodeposition of the coating components on the cathodes is carried out in an electrolysis cell for producing aluminum at temperature of 700 °C from the molten electrolyte KF-NaF-AlF3, containing the following in wt%: KF up to 54, NaF up to 30, AlF3 – the rest, the specified additives in wt% of electrolyte: B2O3 to 6, Al2O3 to 6.
EFFECT: obtaining a solid coating wet with aluminum obtained, which is well bonded with cathodes of the electrolysis cell at considerable temperature reduction, low power consumption and simplified maintenance of the electrolytic cell.
