FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method of monitoring spent fuel pools involves calculated selection of the region of spent fuel pools with maximum multiplication properties, and conducting a model and a real pulse experiment. To this end, a pulsed neutron source and a neutron detector are placed in said region; neutron flux after a pulse of the pulsed neutron source is defined as the number of detector readings nτ(t); the decay constant is calculated. Safety is monitored based on comparing the measured decay constant α with its calculated maximum value αmax. The constantly monitored safety characteristic of the spent fuel pool is the current value of the effective multiplication factor, and the characteristic of multiplication properties is the effective density of neutron sources in the given region.
EFFECT: high radiation safety of spent fuel pools by increasing accuracy of determination and constant monitoring of the effective multiplication factor of the pools.
