FIELD: radio engineering, communication.
SUBSTANCE: multi-mode mobile device with femto cell functionality for extending coverage area sets up connections to a wireless wide area network WWAN and establishes a wireless local area network WLAN; authentication of the multi-mode mobile device is performed by WWAN and the multi-mode mobile device performs access control to the WLAN. Handover is provided for connection to WWAN in case of weak radio link, and position determination of the multi-mode wireless terminal is also provided.
EFFECT: providing peer-to-peer communication without the need for a transit network for mobile units located in the neighbourhood of mobile terminals equipped with femto cell functionality.
