FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: sample of an optical cable is laid inside a section of a steel pipe. The ends of the optical cable come out of the steel pipe. The steel pipe is sealed at the ends and filled with distilled water. The sample of optical cable in the steel pipe filled with distilled water is placed in a climatic chamber, through the flood-gate of which ends of the sample of optical cable come out. Measuring means are connected to optical fibres and attenuation thereof is monitored. The sample of optical cable is laid in a protective polymer pipe such that the ends of the optical cable come out of the protective polymer pipe. The ends of the protective polymer pipe are sealed and the protective polymer pipe is filled with distilled water. The sample of optical cable in the protective polymer pipe filled with water is laid inside the section of steel pipe. Damping polymer pipes sealed at the ends are laid inside the steel pipe on top of the protective polymer pipe. The steel pipe is sealed at the ends and filled with distilled water. The sample of optical cable in the protective polymer pipe and steel pipe filled with distilled water is placed in a climatic chamber. Temperature in the climatic chamber is measured according to a schedule, according which the sample of optical cable is held in the protective polymer pipe and steel pipe filled with distilled water at low subzero temperature until water in the steel pipe and protective polymer pipe completely freezes. The overall cross-section of the sealed damping polymer pipes is selected such that the load on the protective polymer pipe formed when water in the steel pipe freezes is reduced to a given value.
