SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to organic chemistry and specifically to a method of producing 2-amino-5-cyanobenzoic acid derivatives of formula (1) , where R¹ is NHR³; R² is CH₃ or Cl; and R³ is H, C₁-C₄alkyl, cyclopropyl, cyclopropyl-cyclopropyl, cyclopropylmethyl or methylcyclopropyl; which involves bringing into contact (1) a compound of formula 2 , where X is Br or Cl; with (2) metal cyanide-based reagent which contains one or more compounds selected from a group consisting of an alkali metal cyanide and copper (I) cyanide, (3) a copper (I) salt-based reagent, (4) a hydroiodic acid salt-based reagent and (5) at least one compound of formula 3 , where R⁵ is H, phenyl or benzyl; or C₁-C₁₂alkyl, optionally substituted with NR⁹R¹⁰; each R⁶, R⁷ and R⁸ is independently H, C₁-C₁₂ alkyl, phenyl or benzyl; or R⁶ and R⁷ together form -CH=CH-CH=CH-; and R⁹ and R¹⁰ together form -CH=N-CH=CH-, optionally having up to 3 substitutes independently selected from C₁-C₁₂alkyl; under the condition that when X is Cl, R² is methyl.
