FIELD: information technologies.

SUBSTANCE: method and system are provided to use conversion of more than 8×8 and non-rectangular conversion and for generation of a syntactic element "conversion size" indicating conversion for decoding of video information. The syntactic element "conversion size" is generated with the help of a coder, being based on the size of the predicted video block and on content of the video block. Additionally, the syntactic element "conversion size" may be generated in according with the set of rules for selection from 4×4, 8×8 and large sizes of conversion during the coding process. The decoder performs reverse conversion, being based on the syntactic element "conversion size" and rules, used by the coder, at the same time the syntactic element "conversion size" is transmitted to the decoder as a part of a coded bit stream of video information.

EFFECT: improved efficiency of video coding.
