FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine. A surgical stapling apparatus comprises first and second clamping elements. The clamping elements can be pivotably connected to each other and secured in a desired position by a latch. The first and second clamping elements can comprise first and second fixing elements. The first and second fixing elements allow the first and second clamping elements to be rotated relative to one another but lock, or at least constrain them from being separated from one another. Once the latch is in a partially closed position and the first and second clamping elements are being manipulated to position tissue in between.
EFFECT: first and second clamping elements can be coupled together to prevent, or at least reduce the possibility of, the first and second clamping elements from being detached from one another and exposing a cutter.
