FIELD: physics, atomic power.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to nuclear engineering and specifically to design of a target for producing the Mo-99 isotope and extraction thereof. The disclosed target for producing the Mo-99 isotope has a core made of an uranium-aluminium alloy and an aluminium shell, is made in form of a rod having a cross-section with the shape of a symmetrical polygon with sides of equal width or a circle, is sealed at both ends with plugs with cross dimensions and a shape similar to the dimensions and shape of the inner cavity of the shell in each section along the length of the plugs. The core, in which the particle size of intermetallic compounds is not more than 200 mcm, is placed inside the shell between the plugs. The shell is made on the entire length of the core and the plugs and has diffusion contact with both the core and the plugs, which is provided through extrusion of the starting assembly workpiece. The shell has thickness of 0.10-0.25 mm, wherein the outer surface of the shell on the entire length is provided with longitudinal cooling fins.
EFFECT: high heat-transfer capacity, increasing the mass of U-235 in the target to the technologically possible limit, high density of neutron flux, providing chemical processing and extraction of the Mo-99 isotope during a short period of time, high output of the Mo-99 isotope.
