FIELD: veterinary medicine.

SUBSTANCE: in the measuring cells of the instrument for automated counting the number of living infusoria the suspension of cells of Tetrahymena pyriformis and the tested serum is placed, followed by determining of the number of live cells in every minute. The coincidence of time history in the number of living cells in the time for the test serum and the control representing a pool of 10 sera of healthy donors assumes equality of activities of serum complement in these sera.

EFFECT: invention provides a universal method of calculation of determining the functional complement activity using target suitable for all kinds of animals for action of active complement, not requiring additional sensibilisation with antibodies and not subject to reactive lysis.
