FIELD: radio engineering, communication.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to wireless communication networks and specifically to random access in a wireless communication system. A wireless terminal selects one preamble from a first preamble which is randomly selected by the wireless terminal, used for first random access in accordance with a competitive random access procedure, and a second preamble which is assigned to the wireless terminal by a base station, used for second random access in accordance with a non-competitive random access procedure. Information in a message which is transmitted to a base station is then transmitted during or after the random access procedure using the selected preamble, wherein information which is transmitted to the base station during random access using an unselected preamble relates to uplink data.

EFFECT: selectively performing any random access and efficiently using such resources as signature in random access.
