SUBSTANCE: invention relates to wireless communication networks and specifically to random access in a wireless communication system. A wireless terminal selects one preamble from a first preamble which is randomly selected by the wireless terminal, used for first random access in accordance with a competitive random access procedure, and a second preamble which is assigned to the wireless terminal by a base station, used for second random access in accordance with a non-competitive random access procedure, and performing random access only using the selected preamble. The amount of resources used is less than when performing first and second random access concurrently.

EFFECT: selectively performing any random access and efficiently using such resources as signature in random access.
