SUBSTANCE: system includes a light projector for projecting a structured light pattern onto the surface of an object, a device for capturing an image of said pattern and a computing device for determining the shape of the object. The light projector has a light source, a slide with a slide pattern and a lens characterised by a lens vertex. The image capturing device has a lens characterised by a lens vertex. The shape of the object is determined using a triangulation algorithm based on correspondence between points on said slide pattern and said image. The slide pattern comprises a plurality of coded elements characterised by a parameter which defines the shape, length or thickness of the coded element. The coded elements are distributed into a first group or a second group. A first slide virtual line and a second slide virtual line are defined on the slide surface. The first slide virtual line is defined by an intersection between the slide surface and a first plane passing through the lens vertices. The second slide virtual line is defined by an intersection between the slide surface and a second plane passing through the lens vertices. The coded elements of the first and second groups are located along the first and second virtual lines.
EFFECT: fast and accurate measurement of coordinates of a light structure projected on an irregularly shaped surface.
