SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a catalyst composition for oligomerisation of ethylene and a method for oligomerisation using said catalyst. The catalyst composition contains (A) a catalytically active component obtained by combining (A1) a chromium compound and (A2) a ligand with the general structure R₁R₂P-N(R₃)-P(R₄)-N(R₅)-H, where R₁, R₂, R₃, R₄ and R₅ are independently selected from (C₁-C₁₀)alkyl, substituted (C₁-C₁₀)alkyl, aryl and substituted aryl; (B) a modifier containing an organic or inorganic halide; and (C) an activator or cocatalyst. The modifier is selected from ammonium or phosphonium salts of the type [H₄E]X, [H₃ER]X, [H₂ER₂]X, [HER₃]X or [ER₄]X, where E=N or P, X=Cl, Br or I, and R = alkyl, cycloalkyl, acyl, aryl, alkenyl, alkynyl, or two, three or more links appropriately bonded; HX or RX; or ammonium salts based on noncyclic or cyclic amines. The modifier and the chromium compound are different compounds.

EFFECT: catalyst composition has high selectivity and high activity/cycle periodicity ratio for the technological process.
