FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method includes forming a shadow image of molten glass to allow detection of regions of non-uniformity of the refraction index of the melt in form of sliding marks. The vitreous melt is placed in a cuvette made of optical quartz with plane-parallel walls which is located in a tunnel kiln at melting temperature. Homogeneity of optical properties of the melt is determined from the absence of sliding marks.
EFFECT: enabling direct visual inspection of optical homogeneity of a melt.
