FIELD: veterinary medicine.

SUBSTANCE: method comprises determining the parameters of temperature and body weight within the first 24 hours of life. The body temperature is measured after birth (To.b) and after 1, 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 hours (To.), and the body weight after birth (Mo.b) and after 24 hours (Mo.). Then the mean value of the body temperature of each animal in terms of time is calculated, and 1-24 hours after birth ( X ¯ T o . ) , the mean value of the body temperature for a group of animals at birth ( X ¯ T g r .b ) and 1, 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 hours after the birth ( X ¯ T g r . ) . Similarly, the mean values of the body weight for a group of animals at birth are calculated ( X ¯ M g r .b ) , and 24 hours after birth ( X ¯ M g r . ) . According to the results of mean values of temperature and body weight the index of viability (IV) is calculated. If the value of IV>2 the new-born piglets are referred to as viable, if IV<2 they are referred to animals with low viability.

EFFECT: use this method enables to reduce the time and to improve the level of reliability of the study results.
