SUBSTANCE: use: to determine the toughness of the test sample. The essence of the invention consists in that the acoustic data are collected from the acoustic sensor using the acoustic data collection means by applying the load to the test sample, and the said acoustic sensor is connected with the test sample; one or more background points are determined using the background points determining means; one or more points of possible acoustic event are determined using the points determining means of possible acoustic event; the curve of the characteristics of the background noise is interpolated using the background points by using the interpolation means of the curve of the characteristics of the background noise; one or more points of the actual acoustic event are determined, using the points of possible acoustic event and the curve of the characteristics of the background noise using the means of detection of points of the actual acoustic event; and the area of the acoustic event is calculated, included between the point of the actual acoustic event and the curve of the characteristics of the background noise, using the means of calculation of the area of the actual acoustic event.
EFFECT: providing the possibility of determining the actual strength and toughness of hard and super-hard components using acoustic emission.
