SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering. A method of encoding a plurality of transform coefficients associated with residual video data during video coding, comprising encoding information indicating significant coefficients for the plurality of transform coefficients according to the scanning order; dividing the encoded information into at least a first region and a second region, wherein the first region includes at least a DC component from a plurality of transform coefficients; entropy encoding of the encoded information in the first region according to a first context set using context inference criteria; and entropy encoding of the encoded information in the second region according to a second context set using the same context inference criteria as in the first region.

EFFECT: fewer context inference criteria to be used and stored in a video encoder or decoder.
