FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine, namely to orthopaedic dentistry, and can be used in making orthodontic appliances. A method for forming protective coatings on a surface of an orthodontic appliance involves the abrasive water-jet machining of an inner surface and the ion-beam finishing of an outer surface of a metal base of the orthodontic appliance followed by applying a transient zirconium sub-layer, coating alternating layers high in zirconium nitride (from 5 to 20% of zirconium, the rest - zirconium nitride) and low in zirconium nitride (from 5 to 40% of zirconium nitride, the rest - zirconium) by controlling a mixture ratio in each layer depending on a desired colour of the orthodontic appliance, and coating a facing hard layer (from 40 to 90% of zirconium nitride, the rest - zirconium). The transient sub-layer is coated in a thickness of 5 nm to 20 nm; each layer low in zirconium nitride is from 5 nm to 20 nm thick; each layer high in zirconium nitride is from 30 nm to 70 nm thick; the facing layer is from 1 mcm to 5 mcm thick; the coating thickness is up to 100 mcm.
EFFECT: increasing coating hardness, plasticity and strength.
