FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: digital confocal image of corneal nerve fibres in anterior epithelial layers of the cornea and Bowman's membrane is formed. An assumed main direction, in relation of which from the angle α=0° to α=179° a number of integral elongations of the corneal nerve fibres and which comprises in each element a sum of image points with the coordinates x, y for each angle α, fulfilling two conditions if the image point belongs to the presented corneal nerve fibre and if a tangent line to the corneal nerve fibre passes in this point at an angle α rounded to the nearest whole number to the main direction of the image, is specified on the image. Absolute maximum and absolute minimum integral elongations are specified among the produced number of the integral elongations of the corneal nerve fibres, and an anisotropic factor of the corneal nerve fibre direction is calculated. If the anisotropic factor of the corneal nerve fibre direction is less than 2.8 for people aged over 40 years, and less than 3.0 for people aged under 40 years, diabetic polyneuropathy is diagnosed.
EFFECT: technique provides the objective diagnostic of diabetic polyneuropathy accompanying latent forms of diabetes mellitus that is ensured by determining the anisotropic factor.
