FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry, particularly a method of producing alkyl esters of phenanthrene-9-carboxylic acid, which are used starting compounds for producing medicinal preparations. The method of producing alkyl esters of phenanthrene-9-carboxylic acid of formula , where R=CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, includes reacting phenanthrene with CCl4 and an alcohol (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol) in the presence of iron acetyl acetonate in molar ratio [Fe(acac)3]:[phenanthrene]:[CCl4]:[alcohol]=5-15:100:500-1000:100-1000, at temperature of 130°C for 4-6 hours in an argon atmosphere. The output of methyl ester of phenanthrene-9-carboxylic acid is 74%, and the output of ethyl, n-propyl and n-butyl ester is 80%, 96% and 85%, respectively.
