FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method of obtaining methyl ester of 2-benzo[b]furancarboxylic acid, which is used as initial compound in synthesis of pharmaceutical preparations. Essence of method lies in interaction of benzo[b]furan with carbon tetrabromide and methanol in presence under impact of iron-containing catalyst, selected from the group of ferrocene (Fe(C5H5)2), iron (III) acetylacetonate or iron (II) bromide at temperature 130-150°C for 4-5 h with mole ratio [catalyst]:[benzo[b]furan]:[CBr4]:[methanol] =1: 100: 200: 1000-1100, output of methyl ester of 2-benzo[b]furancarboxylic acid reaches 96-98%.
