FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: system comprises a direct reduction shaft furnace in which iron oxide is reduced to metallic iron using a stream of reducing gas and an off gas is provided, a coke oven gas (COG) source for feeding COG into the stream of reducing gas containing at least a portion of off gas, which is used in said direct reduction shaft furnace, and a pipe for transferring a portion of the COG from the COG source into a transition zone of the direct reduction shaft furnace. During feeding the COG has temperature of about 1200°C or higher. The COG has CH4 content of about 2% to about 13%. The COG is preferably reformed COG. Optionally, the COG is fresh hot COG. The COG source includes a partial oxidation system. Optionally, the COG source includes a hot oxygen burner.
EFFECT: invention minimises the amount of DRI, HDRI or HBI, which can be obtained from the used amount of COG or BOFG, excluding an external catalytic reforming furnace, restricting accumulation of N2 to an acceptable level.
