FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of obtaining oxidation-resistant crosslinked ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and use in artificial body parts, including medical prostheses, containing or made from one or more said polymers. The method includes a step of mixing UHMWPE resin with a first amount of a first additive and a second amount of a second additive, consolidating the UHMWPE and subsequent crosslinking of the consolidated UHMWPE. The first additive is selected from a group consisting of phenolic antioxidants and hindered amines, and the second additive is selected from a group consisting of phosphorous additives, polyatomic alcohols, phenolic antioxidants, hindered amines, carotenoids, amino-acid-based additives, thiosynergists and acid antioxidants. The first and second additives are different.
EFFECT: invention enables to use lower concentrations of additives and/or lower levels of crosslinking radiation or chemical reagents when producing crosslinked UHMWPE, having desirable physical properties, such as wear resistance and oxidation resistance, which are impossible without synergistic interaction of the additives.
