FIELD: measurement equipment.
SUBSTANCE: fixed specific points are found on glacier slopes. The glacier and fixed specific points are surveyed from a spacecraft, and the image is produced. A reference range is fixed in the form of a line passing via fixed specific points. In case of crossing of glacier image and reference range they measure the distance from the reference range to the maximum remote extreme point of the glacier tongue by the received image. If the glacier image and reference range do not cross, they measure the distance from the reference range to the minimum remote extreme point of the glacier tongue. Survey from the spacecraft is repeated, when survey conditions are available. Variation of the distance from the reference range to the extreme point of the glacier tongue is determined. Speed of motion of the frontal part of the glacier is calculated.
EFFECT: determination of glacier motion speed remotely, without presence of experts on a glacier or its slope.
