SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering. A method of coding video images, where each video image is partitioned into LCU (largest coding units) includes receiving a leaf CU; performing recursive quadtree-based breakdown of the current LCU to obtain at least one lead CU; determining a QP (quantisation parameter) minimum CU size; incorporating the quantisation parameter information for the current leaf CU in a stream if the leaf CU size from said at least one leaf CU is larger than or equal to the QP minimum CU size; incorporating shared quantisation parameter information for the current leaf CU and at least a second leaf CU from said at least one leaf CU in the stream if the leaf CU size is less than the QP minimum CU size and the original size of the current leaf CU is equal to the QP minimum CU size, wherein the current leaf CU and said at least second leaf CU are broken from the same parent leaf CU.
EFFECT: high coding efficiency while simultaneously cutting decoding time.
