SUBSTANCE: invention relates to video processing technologies. A method of decoding video is disclosed. The method includes a step of analysing, from an encoded video bit stream, information on the size of a coding unit for determining the maximum size of a coding unit and determining a plurality of maximum coding units, using the maximum size of the coding unit determined according to the information on the size of the coding unit. The method also includes analysing, from said bit stream, division information indicating whether a coding unit is divided, and determining, based on the division information, at least one coding unit which is hierarchically divided from the current maximum coding unit from said plurality of maximum coding units.
EFFECT: efficient video decoding owing to use of a hierarchical coding unit having a different size.
