SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding and decoding video. Disclosed is a method of decoding video, including extraction of information on maximum size of coding unit, which is a data unit, in which image is decoded, and coding information on encoded depth and coding mode for image encoding units of a bit stream; and decoding image based on said coding units using information on maximum size of coding and information encoding on encoded depth and coding mode, image is hierarchically divided into maximum coding units and units for encoding according to depths, and coding units independently are separated according to encoded depth. Encoded depth of coding unit is selected as providing least error after prediction coding based on prediction units divided from coding unit, and conversion, based on conversion units, separated from coding unit, and dimensions of conversion units is determined independent of dimensions of prediction units.

EFFECT: providing image encoding and decoding based on hierarchical coding unit having a different size.
