SUBSTANCE: disclosed is a method of decoding video using a video decoder. The method includes a step of extracting, using a video decoder, from a bit stream, information on the size of a coding unit for determining the size of a coding unit and determining a plurality of maximum coding units, using the maximum size of the coding unit determined according to the information on the size of the coding unit. The method also includes a step of extracting, using the video decoder, from a bit stream, division information indicating whether a coding unit of the current depth is divided into coding units of a lower depth, and the maximum depth indicating the total number of times the coding unit can be divided.
EFFECT: efficient video decoding with high resolution due to the use of a hierarchical coding unit having a different size.
