FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an electrochromic device which includes: (a) an electrochromic layer which includes electrochromic material which is configured to undergo a first electrochromic transition; and (b) a counter electrode layer which includes counter electrode material configured to undergo a second electrochromic transition; wherein the device does not contain a composition-homogeneous layer of electrically insulating, ion-conducting material between the electrochromic layer and the counter electrode layer, and wherein at least one of the electrochromic layer and the counter electrode layer contains lithium. The invention also relates to a method of making the device and an apparatus for making the device.
EFFECT: materials and the microstructure of electrochromic devices improve performance and reliability compared to conventional devices.
