SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processing digital signals, particularly to compressing data and improving entropy coding of video sequences. A method of processing a data stream consisting of a plurality of syntax elements is based on replacing syntax elements, whose values have a high probability of occurrence, with syntax elements whose values have a low probability. The method comprises determining context for a syntax element and calculating the probability of occurrence of values of those syntax elements in a model of a data stream having a defined context; replacing syntax elements of the data stream having a defined context if the calculated probability of occurrence of the value of the syntax element is higher than a given threshold with syntax elements whose values have a low probability.
EFFECT: high efficiency and low computational complexity of entropy coding.
