FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method of producing ultrafine zinc oxide includes reacting coarse zinc oxide with ammonium bicarbonate in an aqueous solution, separating the precipitate of basic zinc carbonate from the aqueous phase, followed by heat treatment to obtain the finished product. The reaction of coarse zinc oxide with ammonium bicarbonate in an aqueous solution is carried out with the ratio of components of ZnO:NH4HCO3:H2O - 1:(0.6-0.8):(4.1-10.0) by weight. Heat treatment of the basic zinc carbonate is carried out at the temperature in the range of 200-400°C.

EFFECT: invention reduces the consumption of coarse zinc oxide at the step of producing basic zinc carbonate, reduces power consumption at the step of separating the intermediate product - basic zinc carbonate - from the aqueous phase, limits the temperature range of treating the basic zinc carbonate and shortens the duration of the process and the production of ultrafine zinc oxide with the particle size of 10-15 nm.
