FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to plasma gasification reactors or vitrified materials which have layers of reactive carbonaceous material, a method of forming and maintaining a carbonaceous layer, and starting material for formation of carbon-containing products for use among particles of carbonaceous layer. Reactor comprises a reaction vessel containing a carbonaceous layer and comprising one or more plasma torches to create a temperature rise within bed, a reaction vessel having one or more inlets for feed material above bed for laying material to be processed outside vessel on a layer of one or more gas exhaust openings above bed to product gas outlet of vessel and one or more openings for slag in bottom layer to exit of molten slag and metal from vessel, and a carbonaceous layer containing a mass of particles which contain carbon and are of different size and shape, leaving voids between particles, and particle strength sufficient to maintain voids between particles under pressure of processed material layer, and mass of particles containing carbon, has at least 25 % carbon content in particles, other than coke, selected from a group consisting of wood blocks of natural wood, blocks containing carbon powder, and one or more binders, and mixtures thereof. Method of generating and maintaining carbonaceous layer with components, replacing coke, comprises formation of certain number of non-coke components, formation of an initial carbonaceous layer with number of coke particles, conducting a pyrolysis process with carbonaceous layer and replacing carbon material in pyrolysis process.

EFFECT: invention minimises use of coke.
